French Toast Casserole

This French Toast Casserole is soft, golden, and perfectly custardy with the most delicious cinnamon flavor. It's like french toast in a bread pudding form, making it the perfect make ahead breakfast for a large group. It's even topped with powdered sugar before being served.

Ingredients

French Toast Casserole

  • 8 large eggs, room temperature
  • 510 grams (2 1/4 cups) milk
  • 106 grams (1/2 cup) light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 16 oz loaf of French bread

Crumble

  • 268 grams (1 1/3 cup) light browns ugar
  • 188 grams (1 1/2 cup) all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 198 grams (1 3/4 sticks) unsalted butter, cubed and chilled

Instructions

French Toast Casserole

  1. Whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl until well combined.
  2. Spray a 13 x 9 pan with baking spray. Tear up a loaf of French bread into small pieces and place in the pan until the pan is fully lined with an even layer of bread.
  3. Gently pour the mixture over the bread. Carefully toss the bread until it is fully immersed in the mixture and gently press  it back out into an even layer.
  4. Fully cover the pan in plastic wrap and chill for at least 4 hours, if not overnight.
  5. Once the casserole has chilled, preheat the oven to 350º F.
  6. Whisk together the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a large bowl.
  7. Add in the cold, cubed butter and mix together with your hands, gently massaging the dry ingredients into the butter.
  8. Continue to mix until the butter is in pea sized pieces or slightly larger.
  9. Sprinkle the crumb on top of the casserole in an even layer until it is fully covered.
  10. Bake casserole for 40-50 minutes until it is set.
  11. Let casserole cool for at least 15 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar and serving.

Notes

  • Leftover casserole can be wrapped in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
